About Thermaikos Gulf Protected Marine Area

The Thermaikos Gulf Protected Marine Area encompasses the northern section of the Thermaikos Gulf, stretching along the coasts of Central Macedonia in Greece. The region is characterized by its unique combination of shallow coastal waters, estuaries, wetlands, and sandy beaches that provide crucial breeding and feeding grounds for numerous marine and bird species. The gulf serves as an important habitat for fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and migratory birds, some of which are protected or endangered. Several river deltas, including those of Axios and Aliakmonas, feed freshwater and nutrients into the gulf, fostering rich biodiversity and supporting local fisheries. Historically, the gulf has been essential to regional commerce and fishing while offering scenic coastal views and recreational water activities. Visitor appeal lies in birdwatching, coastal nature walks, and small-scale fishing experiences. The area also holds archaeological significance with nearby ancient sites that reflect the region’s long human history. Despite being close to urban centers like Thessaloniki, the protected marine area maintains valuable natural spots where visitors can enjoy quiet wildlife observation and appreciate the marine ecosystem. Conservation measures are in place to manage fishing practices, control pollution, and preserve habitats to maintain the ecological balance of the gulf.
